Elongation of those born with dwarfism means a chance to improve their quality of life

The surgical technique of elongation helps to lengthen, correct and stabilize the bone malformations that accompany the dwarfism acondroplasic.

Types of dwarfism

BALANCED, CALLED 'HARMONIOUS'
The limbs are proportional to the torso (for example Turner syndrome linked to chromosomal modifications). The subject is small but well proprotioned.

UNBALANCED, CALLED 'DYSHARMONIOUS'
The limbs are proportionately smaller than the trunk. On a sitting position, the person may appear of normal size, but small when when standing. These are patients with chromosomal abnormalities and affects conditions such as achondroplasia, hypochondroplasia and dyschondroplasia.
The treatment consists, after full evalaution, first the correction of the joints, if problems is present, and then to the elongation of the bone on the different parts (femur, tibia, humerus) according to an individual's needs.

JOINT CORRECTION
Joints with a covering defect of the cotile should be better covered to avoid hip disloaction. Joints with a defective orientation of the joints could be reoriented.

BONE ELONGATION
The elongation can therefore be realized with an internal system to the bone (Albizzia type elongation nail, current Guichet nail), or by means of an external fixator.
